Empowering Youth for Sustainable Development in Hilly Areas

Empowering Youth for Sustainable Development in Hilly Areas

Hilly areas, like those found in Kashmir and other mountainous regions in India, possess a natural beauty and unique culture. However, they are also home to communities that face distinct challenges, particularly in terms of infrastructure, employment, Health care, Education and sustainable development. As someone born and raised in the hills, I’ve seen both the incredible potential these areas hold and the limitations that prevent them from fully flourishing.  One thing that stands out to me is the role of youth in driving change. Young people are the lifeblood of any society. Over the last two years, I’ve been actively working in far-flung hilly areas of Kashmir, and I’ve seen firsthand the immense potential in the youth. They are not only physically active and mentally sharp but also exceptionally hardworking. Their energy, innovation, and resilience can transform entire communities - if they are given the right tools and support.

In this article, I want to explore how empowering youth can be a game-changer for sustainable development in hilly areas and how we can harness this power to create long-lasting change.

1. Creating Local Opportunities

One of the biggest issues in hilly regions is the lack of economic opportunities. Most young people either rely on traditional livelihoods like agriculture, or shepherding, or they migrate to cities for work. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. By equipping youth of these communties with modern skills, such as sustainable farming techniques, eco-tourism, technical courses and handicrafts, we can create economic opportunities that are rooted in the local environment.

For example, training young people in organic farming and eco-friendly tourism can create sustainable income streams while preserving the natural beauty of the region. Developing youth-led businesses like homestays or guided trekking tours can cater to the growing demand for eco-conscious travel, keeping the younger generation connected to their roots while providing them with a dignified livelihood.

2. Girls’ Empowerment and Skill Development

Empowering young girls in hilly areas is crucial to creating a more balanced and sustainable future. Traditionally, many of these girls had limited opportunities to pursue education or skills beyond household work. However, in the past few years, efforts to involve girls in vocational training have begun to transform their lives. We have focused on providing girls with skills in areas like handicrafts, handloom, dairy farming, and pickle making. These crafts not only tap into the rich cultural heritage of the region but also offer sustainable income opportunities for young women. Girls trained in these areas are now becoming financially independent and contributing to their families, which in turn strengthens the social fabric of their communities.

By empowering young women to take charge of their future, we are also challenging long-standing gender norms. This shift is essential not only for their personal growth but also for the economic development of the entire region. Investing in girls' education and skills development has a ripple effect, improving health, economic outcomes, and social well-being across generations.

3. Promoting Environmental Stewardship

Hilly areas are ecologically fragile. Landslides, deforestation, and the impact of climate change are ever-present threats. In such environments, the role of youth in environmental conservation is crucial. By educating young people on the importance of preserving their environment and involving them in tree-planting initiatives, watershed management, and waste management, we can cultivate a generation that prioritizes sustainability.

The engagement of youth in environmental initiatives also creates a deeper bond between them and their communities. When young people see the positive impact they can have on their environment, it fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility. Programs like tree plantations, river clean-ups, and campaigns against illegal logging or poaching should actively involve youth, turning them into the protectors of the land.

4. Access to Education and Skill Development

Education is a powerful tool for transformation. But in hilly areas, access to quality education is often a challenge. Schools are far away, teachers are scarce, and resources are limited. To empower youth for sustainable development, we must prioritize education, both formal and vocational.

Non-traditional forms of education, such as mobile libraries, online learning platforms, and community-driven vocational training centres, can help bridge this gap. With technology advancing rapidly, young people in even the most remote areas can access quality education and skills training, enabling them to build sustainable livelihoods.

At the same time, vocational training programs that focus on locally relevant skills like carpentry, beekeeping, mushroom farming, Plumbing or house wiring and other technical training courses, can empower young people to create their own opportunities and even employ others in their community.

5. Building Leadership Among Youth

For true sustainable development, we need youth to take on leadership roles in their communities. Leadership training programs, youth-led councils, and community engagement initiatives can cultivate a new generation of leaders who are passionate about creating positive change. This leadership doesn’t just stop at community initiatives, it can also extend to local governance and policy-making.

Youth must have a voice in decisions that affect their future. By encouraging young people to participate in local politics and civil society, we can ensure that they have a say in the policies and programs that will shape their lives and their communities.

6. Youth Involvement in Sports and Athletics

In addition to vocational training, there’s untapped potential in sports and athletics among the youth in hilly areas. These young people are physically robust and mentally resilient, which makes them perfect candidates for excelling in sports. Unfortunately, many of them lack access to the necessary infrastructure and trained coaches that could help them hone their athletic skills.

If schools in hilly areas were equipped with proper sports facilities and qualified teachers, the results could be transformative. Youth could not only engage in physical activity, which would promote better health, but also aim for professional sports careers. With the right support, I believe many of these young athletes could compete at state, national, or even international levels.

Engaging the youth in sports would also have social benefits, helping them build discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills. Sports have the power to unite communities, instil confidence, and give young people a sense of purpose and belonging.

7. Leveraging Government and NGO Support

Finally, youth empowerment for sustainable development in hilly areas requires strong partnerships with governments and NGOs. Programs that offer financial support, mentorship, and access to resources are critical to ensuring that youth can turn their ideas into reality. Government schemes like the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) or Startup India can provide a much-needed financial boost to young entrepreneurs in rural areas. Similarly, NGOs focused on skill-building, environmental conservation, and youth development can offer mentorship and capacity-building opportunities.

In our vision for sustainable development, we need to ensure that young people are at the centre of every plan, not just as beneficiaries but as leaders and drivers of change.

Conclusion

The challenges faced by hilly areas are numerous, but so are the opportunities. By focusing on empowering youth through education, leadership, environmental stewardship, and creating local opportunities, we can set the foundation for sustainable development that will last for generations.

As a young person from these very hills, I believe that the future belongs to those who take the reins today. Let’s empower our youth and give them the tools they need to transform their communities, one step at a time.
